Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) and Intervención Lecto-escritura (ILe)

Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) and Intervención Lecto-escritura (ILe) are small group literacy interventions designed to close the gap in literacy learning. The 2012–2013 professional development opportunities for LLI and ILe are listed below.

Kindergarten Teachers: We will focus on increasing kindergarten teachers’ expertise in differentiated, small group, language, and literacy instruction. This instruction is one component of DPS’ core literacy curriculum. We will offer professional development for ELA-S teachers through the ILe pilot project and for English instruction through the LLI pilot project. By providing long-term, job-imbedded professional development at the kindergarten level, we can decrease the need for intervention in later years.

ELA-S Intervention and Grade 1 Teachers: We will focus on children who are learning to read and write in Spanish and find learning difficult. ILe is a Spanish-language literacy intervention program developed by DPS teachers and specialists based on the work of Fountas and Pinnell in When Readers Struggle: Teaching that Works. In schools where Spanish intervention is available, it is preferable to train the interventionist. First grade classroom teachers are invited to apply for the pilot.

Intervention Teachers: LLI is a Tier II or III intervention for reading, writing, and language. We will offer professional development for schools that have purchased LLI materials to use as designed. Special sessions will be scheduled in October when the Red kit arrives at your school. We will have some kits to loan but this resource is very limited.

Teachers who attended LLI or ILe Professional Development in 2010–2011 and 2011–2012: Continuing contact professional development will be required for two half-day sessions. Previously trained teachers are welcome to attend as well.

Guided reading and assisted writing classes will be offered to classroom teachers and will be advertised when they are scheduled.
