Best Practices in Mathematics

The DPS mathematics best practices were developed through a collaboration of education professionals. Best practices describe teaching behaviors that, once put into practice, help develop a vision of highly effective mathematics instruction. Self-assessment of your teaching practices, along with their assessment by others, will help you focus on specific areas and methods of professional development.

Best practices support the full implementation of the mathematics program. They include a focus on meeting needs of all students, including English language learners, special education students, and gifted and talented students.

The big ideas of best practices in mathematics include:

  • Design lessons to support full implementation of the mathematics program
  • Support students’ self-management of learning
  • Establish the physical classroom environment to support mathematics learning
  • Question to promote student thinking
  • Use assessments to support student learning
  • Support mathematical communication
