DPS Success After-School Tutoring Curriculum

DPS Success is an after-school tutoring curriculum designed for students in grades 3–10 across the city. Schools have targeted students who will benefit from this short-term intervention. Classes include strategy instruction in reading, writing, and mathematical problem solving. Materials include Comprehensive Math Assessment and Soaring Scores in grades 3–8, and CSAP Reading and Math Coach in grades 9 and 10.

The purpose is to teach students strategies, not to get the right answers. Powerful ways to help students learn strategies include:

  • Think-alouds and modeling about how to use strategies;
  • Guided practice with students;
  • Support for students as they work in pairs or alone;
  • Discussions about the thinking they did to come up with their answers; and
  • Analyzing test questions and being explicit about strategies.
