National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Academic Eligibility

For students entering a Division I college or university in the fall of 2003 or after, NCAA initial eligibility will be evaluated using the 14 core course standard.  To be classified as a qualifier under this standard, students need to:

  • Graduate from high school and successfully complete 14 core courses as listed below and have a core-course grade-point average and a combined score on the SAT or a sum score on the ACT based on the new core GPA/test score index.

The 14 core courses are:

  • 4 years of English
  • 2 years of mathematics (Algebra 1 or higher)
  • 2 years of natural/physical science (one must be a lab science)
  • 1 year of additional English, mathematics, or natural/physical science
  • 2 years of social science
  • 3 years of additional courses

Division 1 Core-Course Increase for Entering Class of 2008

Sixteen core courses will be required effective August 1, 2008. To be classified as a qualifier under this standard, students need to complete:

  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of mathematics (Algebra 1 or higher)
  • 2 years of natural/physical science (one must be a lab science)
  • 1 year of additional English, mathematics, or natural/physical science
  • 2 years of social studies
  • 4 years of additional core courses
