Career & Technical Education

http://www.careertech.org/makingthedifference

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs focus on preparing students for job placement, post-secondary studies, and the formation of lifelong learning habits. Individual courses are career preparatory and provide students contextual learning opportunities to enhance their core academic skills. CTE programs are available to all students, including those with special needs, in the district’s K-8, middle and comprehensive high schools, as well as CEC Middle College, Denver School of the Arts, Contemporary Learning Academy, Summit Academy, Denver Center for International Studies, Denver Center for 21st Century Skills, Vista Academy, High Tech Early College, Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy and Emily Griffith High School.

The CTE department prides itself on the support it offers to the individual schools and CTE classrooms. Seventy percent of general fund CTE budget dollars go directly to the classroom in the form of industry-standard equipment/software, supplies, maintenance of equipment, student transportation for excursions and conferences, curriculum updates, and professional development for teachers. Additional dollars are allocated for substitute teachers for CTE programs.

The CTE department staff administers the provisions of the Colorado Technical Act (CTA) and the Carl Perkins Act. CTA provides partial reimbursement to the district for CTE program expenses incurred by the district, and the Carl Perkins Act provides federal grant money for CTE programs. The CTE staff also provides professional training for all CTE instructors, assistance with program approvals, guidance with classroom instruction, resources for classroom materials, updated instructional strategies, and acts as a liaison for state programs, such as Advanced Credit Pathways and state standards alignment.
