Free Map Resources

Xpeditions Atlas @ National Geographic  Hundreds of printer-friendly blackline maps - world, region or country - and you can also choose between blank or labelled maps.  They also have an immense collection of lesson plans and activities organized by standard or grade level and of course the "Xpedition" Hall, an online interactive museum. Great resource.

TerraServer USA  is a free database of aerial photographs and topographic maps of the US.  You can search by place name or type in an address!

The Upsidedown Map Page  Shows an entertaining variety fo upsidedown maps and related resources about viewing the world from different perspectives.  Great tool for teaching students about different map projections, their purposes and their effect on how we view the world.

Geographer's Craft Project  at UC Boulder is a great site that serves as an introduction into the geographer's craft. The interactive site takes students through several overviews, some of which may be too advanced for K-12.  This link will take you to the Map Projection Overview, but you'll find links to overviews for GPS, Geodetic Datums and Coordinate Systems as well.

NASA's Earth from Space site provides a very large (it's huge!) collection of satellite images of the Earth.  Once you get familiar with the collection, you can try searching the Find Photos link at the top of the page for a clickable map of the Earth (it's much more challenging to search and navigate).
