Raised in the border city of El Paso, TX, I have personal experience as a second-language learner, as well as professional experience with bilingual education and effective instructional practices. Previously, I taught ELA-S Introduction to Social Studies, US History, and government at West High School. I earned my BA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and my MA from the School of Education at the University of Colorado, Denver in Information and Learning Technologies. As the social studies coordinator, I am responsible for implementing the district's Secondary Social Studies Teaching and Learning Project, which aims to redesign the core courses in social studies and improve student achievement by apprenticing students within each discipline and using inquiry-based instructional methodologies. As part of the Teaching and Learning Project, I facilitated the formation of a Redesign Team from the pool of teacher leaders to select new materials and redesign the high school US History curriculum. We designed and field tested the curriculum and materials and are implementing the course districtwide. I also collaborate with several professional organizations and institutions of higher education to provide instructional resources and coordinate professional development opportunities for social studies teachers.
