Maruca Salazar

I began working in DPS in 1979. I was hired under President Carter’s Educational Reform in Bilingual/Multicultural Education. For the next 22 years, I taught at Horace Mann and Lake middle schools. My arts background supported second language learners as they arrived at our schools from different Southeast Asian and Latin American countries. I graduated from the Universidad Veracruzana in México with a degree and graduate studies in fine arts and literature. In 1987, I received a master’s degree in multicultural education from the University of Colorado with an emphasis in cultural aesthetics in southwestern art. Currently, I serve as the arts coordinator for the district. My work revolves around the articulation of the arts standard-based curriculum with The Denver Plan through a consistent and intentional professional development for arts teachers. I believe better teachers create better students, and better students are those that practice creativity in their everyday lives.
